THE COST PROJECT 245 AND THE CRITICAL AREAS OF ACTIVES ANTENNAS

Introduction

The development of active phased arrays for radar, started over 20 years ago, is not completed yet. Only a handful of active phased array radars are operational and much work is still on going to improve the technologies of radiating elements, transmit receive modules and beam formers.

Active antennas for telecommunications partially benefit from this R&D, but differences in requirements (low cost, multiple beam operation, re-use of frequencies) and restrictions attached to military developments limit the technology transfer possibilities.

A number of critical areas require dedicated research and, accordingly, COST project 245 set up specialized working groups to improve engineering techniques and technologies in these areas.
